2018 Walking Tour to Calabria  REGGIO CALABRIA Province

Visiting: PENTIDATTILO, MELITO PORTO SALVO, BOVA, PALIZZI, PIETRAPENNATA, STAITI, GAMBARIE, LAGO DELLA MENTA, STRAITS OF MESSINA, CATANIA, VILLA SAN GIOVANNI

The Malta Geographical Society is pleased to inform members that we are again organising our annual walking tour outside Maltese shores, this time in Southern Italy.

Booking is open and is on a first-come first-served basis. and places are limited. In view of the roads on the Aspromonte, we will be limiting the tour to a 34seater coach. We have done our best to keep the price as low as possible: in fact, considering that the tour is by air and includes the ferry crossing from Sicily to Calabria and vice-versa, we have in effect only added on the costs in this regard.

Members are being given a discount of   EUROS10,THAT IS  double their annual subscription!
Nonmembers and friends are welcome.

Friday 9 March 2018
0400 Meet at Malta International Airport for check in
0550 Departure from Malta on board Air Malta flight KM640 to Catania
0630 Arrival at Catania International Airport Vincenzo Bellini, followed by departure by coach to Messina, with a short stop for coffee (not included in price) along the way if time permits if not one can have a snack on the ferry
0815 Arrival in Messina and embarkation on the ferry
0840 Departure from Messina. During the short ferry trip, one can opt to take in the splendours of the majestic Straits of Messina from the ferry deck or to enjoy a coffee (not included in price) from the on-board cafeterias
0900 Arrival in Villa San GIovanni, where we will meet our Calabrian experienced trekking guide who will be with us for the whole duration of our stay in Calabria. Departure to Pentedattilo
1045 Arrival in Pentidattilo
MORNING WALK in Pentidattilo. Pentedattilo Calabrian Greek: Pentadàktilo is a ghost town in Calabria, southern Italy, administratively a frazione of Melito di Porto Salvo. It is situated at 250 m above sea level on the Monte Calvario, a mountain whose shapes once resembled that of five fingers (whence the name, from the Greek penta + daktylos , meaning five fingers
1230 Transfer by coach to Bova
1400 Arrival in Bova. Bova Calabrian Greek: Chòra tu Vùa is one of the Greek-Bovesian speaking villages of Bovesia, one of the two Grikospeaking areas of southern Italy. The village is inscribed into I Borghi più belli d'Italia list. Here we will proceed to a typical trattoria, where we will enjoy a 5course traditional Calabrian lunch, consisting of antipasto, pasta, meat-based main course including side dish, dessert. coffee and liquer. Lunch is inclusive of unlimited local wine and mineral water
1600 AFTERNOON WALK in Bova, which will also allow us to visit the castle which is perched on the highest point of the village and which affords spectacular views of the whole Ionian coast of Sicily stretching from Siracusa to Messina and dominated by the beauty of the snow-capped Mount Etna.
1830 Departure to Melito Porto Salvo
1930 Arrival at our hotel in Melito Porto Salvo, the 3 Star Superior Hotel Tito Serrano' (https://hotelserrano.wordpress.com), run by the five Serrano brothers Giovanni, Diego, Sandro, Massimo and Roberto. Check in, allocation of rooms and free time. The hotel is conveniently located within the coastal village of Melito Porto Salvo, making it an ideal base for our group and especially for those who enjoy an evening after-dinner stroll.

0730 Buffet Breakfast at the Hotel.
0830 Transfer by coach to Palizzi
0930 Arrival in Palizzi. Short MORNING WALK in the village of Palizzi. Palizzi Calabrian Greek Spiròpoli is one of the Greek (Griko dialect) speaking villages of Bovesia, one of the two Griko-speaking areas of southern Italy.The southernmost point in mainland Italy lies in Palizzi. The village is known for the production of wine which is stored directly from the wine press in underground wine stone cisterns, known as catoi.
1015 Departure to Pietrapennata
1100 Arrival in Pietrapennata. MORNING point to point walk to Staiti. During our walk we will come across the ruins of a Greek monastery located in the middle of the mountains.
1415 Arrival in the Greek village of Staiti, where people still speak their own version of the Greek language and where streets and signs are in both Italian and Greek. This is where Piazza Vittoria becomes Platia Nike and where Via Roma becomes Dromo Roma. Here we will proceed to a typical trattoria, where we will enjoy a 5 course traditional Calabrian lunch, consisting of antipasto, pasta, meat-based main course including side dish, dessert. coffee and liquer. Lunch is inclusive of unlimited local wine and mineral water
1600 After lunch we will visit the unique Museum of the Italo-Greek Saints, which has an impressive collection of Italo-Greek icons which is unique in Italy.
1630 We will proceed to the outskirts of Staiti
1645 AFTERNOON WALK. We will walk in the beautiful countryside outside Staiti and visit the ruins of the Church of Santa Maria dei Tridetti.

1915 Arrival in Melito Porto Salvo
2030 Dinner at the Hotel: Pasta, Main Course including side dish, Dessert, Coffee, Free flowing wine and mineral water

0730 Breakfast and check out of Hotel
0800 Departure from Melito Porto Salvo. Our coach will take us on the majestic Aspromonte Mountains, where we will pass through a number of quaint villages on the Aspromonte mountains.
1030 Arrival at the Lago della Menta
MORNING WALK along the banks of the Lago della Menta
1330 Transfer to the mountain village of Gambarie, located at 1350 metres above sea level and right in the heart of the Aspromonte National Park.
1400 Arrival in Gambarie. Here we will proceed to a typical trattoria, where we will enjoy a 5 course traditional Calabrian lunch, consisting of antipasto, pasta, meat-based main course including side dish, dessert. coffee and liquer. Lunch is inclusive of unlimited local wine and mineral water
1630 Departure towards Villa San GIovanni
1730 Arrival in Villa San Giovanni and embarkation on ferry
1800 Departure by ferry to Messina
1830 Arrival in Messina and transfer by coach to Catania Airport 2030 Arrival at Catania Airport in time for check in and embarkation on our Airmalta flight KM643
2215 Departure from Catania
2255 Arrival in Malta
